Sunday Walk. 1st August 2010.
1st August 2010. Purple Mountain and Tomies Mountain.
Start at Black Valley youth hostel. Finish at Kate Kearney’s Cottage.
Distance 6 miles, 10 km; Ascent over 2500 ft, 700m; Grade Difficult; Walking Time 5 hours.
Terrain; steep and rocky slopes and open mountainside.
Purple Mountain gets its name from the sandstone rocks which yield various hues of purple and pink. At the summit there is a sense of being on top of the world. Depending on the weather we may hike a further mile or more to include Shehy. These three mountains in one day ? Are you up to it ?
Alternatively; Those who prefer a more casual walk; Park at Kate Kearney’s Cottage and walk through the Gap of Dunloe on the famous jarvey trail.
Alternative walk in addition to the above because of the Gofing Championships in Killarney.
Bull’s Head.
Leave Hanafin’s pub at 11.00. Drive to parking spot near Bull’s Head, Map ref. V528 993
Walk a spectacular path overlooking Dingle Bay to Bulls Head and return over a rocky outcrop between Doonties and Kinard with even more spectacular views out over the Atlantic.
Distance 5 miles, 7KM, Grade moderate, Time 3 hours.
