Annascaul Walks hosts its third Tom Crean Endurance Walk this year. It takes place on Saturday June 20th.  2015 marks the centenary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition. This tough 20 mile hill walk challenges participants to embrace the spirit of determination and courage shown by the polar explorers during the most incredible survival story in history. The club looks forward to welcoming back previous participants especially those who will be attempting the challenge for the third consecutive year.
Entry Fee includes food, water and barbeque afterwards at Hannafin’s Bar Annascaul.
Walkers will be transported by bus from Annascaul to the start point leaving the South Pole Inn at 7:00 am. The walk begins at 8am. Walkers must be registered prior to the walk either online or at the South Pole Inn on Friday from 7 to 9 pm or on Saturday from 6 to 7 am.The walk is open to adults only ie over 18’s. It is intended for experienced hillwalkers who are familiar with upland terrain and changeable weather conditions. Walkers are advised that proper equipment is essential and in particular that hill walking boots are an absolute requirement. While club members will be present to offer support, man food stations and provide escape routes if necessary participants are asked to note that this is not a guided walk. A GPS File is available. Walkers will be issued with a number prior to the start which must be presented at check points and at the finish in order to receive the Endurance Walk medallion and a voucher for the barbeque. In the interest of safety a time limit applies, decisions are made at the club’s discretion and their word is final.
The guest of honour this year is the Hon. Alexander Shackleton granddaughter of Sir Earnest Shackelton. Lady Alexandra will present finishers with a specially designed medallion bearing an image of the ‘Endurance’ ship.
Other events of the weekend include talks by Michael Smith, author of many books on the history of polar exploration including Shackleton – the Boss, the only biography of Sir Earnest Shackleton.
